Thalabah Merino Stud

Thalabah Merino Stud

Thalabah Merino Stud was first registered in 1992.

Prior to then, the Williams family, under the leadership of patriarch John Williams and his wife Marion, led the field in the medium wool stud industry for many years with the highly successful Koonwarra Merino stud.

Thalabah Merino Stud was originally based on a selection of productive ewes from the Thalaba property.

Rams from Glendonald, Billa Burra Burra and Carrabungla were judiciously introduced with the use of home bred sires.

In later years specially selected rams from Greenland, Roseville Park and Grassy Creek were added to the sire battery.

Three years ago Poll Merino rams from Jolly Jumbuck and Greenland studs were purchased with Thalabah Poll now a registered stud.

In 2019 a Poll Merino from Alfoxton Stud was purchased, a half brother to the 2019 Australian Supreme Ram of the Year in 2019.

His progeny have recently hit the ground and look like an exciting line of sheep.

More About Thalabah Stud

Thalabah Merino Stud

In September this year we purchased a double poll gene ram from Yarrawonga stud for $16,000.

He is a son of Charinga 171365, with fleece measurements of 20.1-micron, 3.0 standard deviation, 99.3 percent comfort factor and sits in the top 5 per cent for yearling clean fleece weight.

He is a modern type Merino that stands incredibly well on his feet and has overall presence and balance complimented by a  productive fleece.

He will be joined over both Thalabah’s horned and existing poll ewes.

The purchase of a double p gene ram was imperative to us as we are taking all steps to accelerate the poll Merino genetics at Thalabah.

This year's draft of sale rams include over a quarter of progeny from a horned ram from SA stud, Greenfields.

‘Lachy’ is incredibly fertile and we also managed to incorporate him into the small, yet growing AI and ET program here at Thalabah.

Semen was also sourced from Langdene stud, sires 07-4073 and 15-0044, and both of their progeny have featured heavily in this year’s sale draft of rams.

We also acquired semen from the Glendonald stud, from a ram that was named the 2019 Victorian hogget of the year.

His progeny started to hit the ground in August, and are again very exciting.

Thalabah stud features a base of 600 stud ewes, classed by Rick Power, from which we select our annual ram drop.

A major stud ewe program that was started 7 years ago is now flowing through into the entire flock.

We pride ourselves on producing a large framed, well-covered sheep with bulky, bright soft handling medium to fine-medium wools.

Our fleeces are high yielding with the average yield for our 2020 unhoused sale rams is 74.85.

We are progressing here at Thalabah, but we haven’t lost sight of the true Thalabah type and breeding an article that fits into the current sheep and wool industries.

This is a wool cut that fills bales and a carcase that sells in the sheepmeat market.
